What is it?

Volume is a physical quantity that measures how much three-dimensional space an object or substance occupies. It is derived from length: any unit of volume corresponds to a cube whose edges are measured in a length unit, which is why the cubic metre (m³) is its base SI unit. In everyday life we more often reach for capacity units such as the litre (l) and millilitre (ml), where one litre is defined as exactly one cubic decimetre. Larger amounts of liquids are frequently given in hectolitres (hl), while very small quantities are measured in cubic centimetres (cm³), which are identical in size to millilitres. Because these units grow in neat powers of ten, converting between them is simply a matter of multiplying or dividing by factors like 1,000. Getting the conversion right matters in cooking and medicine dosing, in engineering and construction, and in trade, where fuel, water and beverages are bought and sold by volume. This calculator handles those conversions for you, so you can move instantly between millilitres, litres, cubic centimetres, cubic metres and hectolitres without second-guessing the decimal point.
